How to Write Better AI Image Prompts
A practical prompt structure for generating clearer AI images with better subjects, lighting, composition, and visual style.
A useful AI image prompt is closer to a short creative brief than a list of quality keywords. Start by naming the main subject clearly, because the model needs to know what should receive the most visual attention.
Add the environment next. A lamp in a cream photography studio produces a different image from the same lamp on a dark workshop desk. The setting gives the model context for materials, background objects, color, and mood.
Composition instructions help control where the subject appears. Useful phrases include close-up product shot, wide establishing view, centered poster composition, overhead flat lay, or three-quarter camera angle. Pick one that matches where the image will be used.
Lighting and color are usually more reliable than vague requests for beauty. Describe soft window light, warm sunrise, hard side lighting, muted earth tones, or a limited black-and-amber palette. These instructions create visible decisions the model can follow.
Finish with one coherent visual treatment, such as editorial illustration, realistic product photography, cinematic concept art, or minimal vector design. Mixing many unrelated styles often produces a less focused result.
A reusable formula is: subject, environment, composition, lighting, color palette, and style. Generate one result, identify the weakest part, then revise that specific instruction instead of rewriting the entire prompt.
