A lightweight reference for the favicon sizes that matter most for websites, web apps, and home screen shortcuts.
Most favicon confusion comes from mixing classic browser icons with newer app-style icon requirements. In practice, a small set covers most needs: 16, 32, 48, 180, 192, and 512 pixels.
The important distinction is that favicon.ico is still useful for browser tabs, while 180px and larger PNG files are more relevant for touch icons, manifests, and install surfaces.
A good favicon generator should make these differences obvious and export the file set without requiring a designer to prepare each size manually.
